February 13, 2025: Student transportation cancelled, OCDSB schools remain open

All school buses and vans serving the OCDSB will be cancelled on February 13, 2025, due to poor weather conditions. For students assigned to public transit (Presto), all 600-series school routes and any school trips on regular routes will not operate.

OCDSB schools will be open. Parents and caregivers are welcome to drop off their children at school and pick them up at regular bell times. The Extended Day Program will also be open for registered students.

About Us

"Find the best version of you"

Flexible schedules, workplace opportunities, smaller classes and self-paced learning are some of the reasons students may choose to attend one of our five schools. The Alternate Program is primarily an independent learning environment where students complete one credit at a time and at their own pace. Students work collaboratively with their teachers to create individualized timelines and develop their learning strategies. In addition, the program offers students the opportunity to learn experientially through a variety of academic programs such as cooperative education, leadership, music, art, gardening, food & nutrition, and housebuilding.

The Alternate program offers the same credits as a traditional program and students graduate with either an OSSD (Ontario Secondary School Diploma) or an OSSC (Ontario Secondary School Certificate). Each year graduates from the Alternate Program go on to attend college and university while others choose to pursue apprenticeships or head into the world of work.

Our School

The main goal of Frederick Banting Secondary Alternate Program is to provide an alternate form of attaining secondary school credits. Students come to Frederick Banting for many different reasons including needing high school completion, academic upgrading, flexible scheduling, or needing a change from the traditional high school model. We graduate over 60 students annually with many going on to apprenticeships, college or university.

Our program is designed to allow for a flexible style of education, yet provides a structure that ensures success for most students who prefer an alternate learning environment.

Our Staff

Staff and students work together to build a safe, creative and caring environment that promotes self-esteem through hard work, personal responsibility and achievement so that our students are ready to meet the challenges of the future.
